Library of Congress Archive Challenge
I'm checkin' in to the Library of Congress!

Q.  And what's the baddest library in entire country???
A.   The Library of Congress!
Wednesday, September 20 -- Library of Congress (Thomas Jefferson Building)
Noon to 1 pm
1st Street, SE, between Independence Avenue and East Capitol Street
Washington, DC  20540

in the "Coolidge Auditorium"
I could not be more excited to be part of this special concert, which will also feature such musical luminaries as NEA Fellow Phil Wiggins, folk legends Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Don Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops), and Brazilian songstress Cissa Paz.  We'll all be performing original interpretations of rare musical material contained in the archives.
For my segment, I've transcribed and re-arranged a slew of melodies played by the Galacian fiddler Berish Katz, and recorded by famed Yiddish folklorist Ruth Rubin in 1947.  I got to go into the Archives and explore the original reel-to-reel tapes of these field recordings.  It's been an exciting musical adventure for me!
Some of these melodies I've arranged in a fairly traditional manner, and some I have not.  At this performance, I'll be accompanied by pianist Sean Lane.  If you're anywhere in the DC area this Wednesday, I encourage you come to this special event.  If you're not, there will be video forthcoming!

The new album, "Seth Kibel Presents Songs of Snark & Despair," is now pretty much available at every off-ramp on the information superhighway.

Click above, and you can listen to samples from every song, as well as find easy links to purchase a copy on CDBaby, or purchase digital downloads from iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby, as well as stream this puppy on Spotify.

I've invested a lot of time, sweat, and moolah into this project, so I'd love for you to listen to it.  And if you like what you hear, please help me to spread the word! Due to the overtly political nature of this recording, many usual promotional avenues are not available to me.  So I'm really counting on ALL OF YOU
to help me spread the word.  Share it on social media, send it to your friends, write reviews on any of the above sites, add it to playlists, etc.  Any promo is good promo!

Oh, here's some early press for the album!  M
ore to come, with any luck!

Snark & Despair cover
The new album is OUT, and available for purchase right now!
(& scroll down for info on a very special concert to benefit victims of Hurricane Harvey!)
The long wait is OVER!!!  My new album, Seth Kibel Presents: Songs of Snark & Despair, is finally out, and available for purchase.  It's a record the likes of which this world has never seen!
You can go to CDBaby and purchase the album right now, as either a physical CD, or digital download.  And it should be available pretty much everywhere else online (iTunes, Spotify, etc.) in a manner of days.
If you'd rather not give your credit card info to the Internet Illuminati, and prefer to support the good folks of the U.S. Postal Service, just send a check for $12 (includes shipping and handling) to the following address:
Seth Kibel (Snarker-in-Chief)
P.O. Box 32615
Baltimore, MD  21282
Add $10 for each additional copy you'd like.  And lemme know if you'd like me to sign it for ya!  If you don't buy this record, I may decide to shut down the government.  Or maybe not.  Only time will tell.
This album is a collection of songs written and recorded in wake of the 2016 Presidential election. With a progressive outlook, and an unhealthy dose of dark humor, these tunes traverse a wide landscape of musical genres, including blues, swing, klezmer, bossa nova, reggae, and more.

We'll make an awful lot of noise for just two musicians, all while previewing our new album, featuring a blend of klezmer, Arabic music, American jazz, and a whole lotta improvisation!
The new album's all done, and it's at the manufacturer as I type.  I should have them in hand by the end of the month (roughly two WH Communications Directors from now).  Kickstarter rewards will be out around then, and the album should be pretty much available everywhere fine music is sold not long after Labor Day.

A return to NYC, an update on the new album, and more!
Are you currently residing in the New York metropolitan area?  Do you have friends or family who do?  College roommates?  Pen pals?  Ex-boyfriends?  Ex-girlfriends?  Former landlords?  Cyber stalkers?  Celebrity crushes?  Pet alligators you released into the city sewers?
If the answer to any of those questions is "heck, yeah," then you need to know about my big gig in Manhattan this coming Sunday!  Spread the word like it's jelly, people!
Sunday, July 16 -- City Winery NYC
155 Varick Street
New York, NY  10013
I'll be there as part of their infamous "Klezmer Brunch," from 11 am to 2 pm.  Tickets are $10, but do not include the crazy yummy brunch.
The band will include yours truly, along with Michael Raitzyk on guitar, Bob Abbott on bass, and the unruly William Kibel on piano, melodica, and cajon.  We'll be doing some klezmer, some jazz, and more!

How's my new album coming along?  Well, here's a video update for ya!
The short story is that "Seth Kibel Presents Songs of Snark & Despair" is all recorded and mixed!  We're just finishing the artwork and mastering, and then it's off to the manufacturer.  We'll definitely have this puppy out before Labor Day, right around the time Bob Mueller starts handing out indictments.
If you helped to support this project on Kickstarter, you'll be getting your rewards around that time.  If you didn't, you should be able to purchase the finished album around then, as well.

Kickstarter Update & lotsa summer shows!
I've got 15 days left on my crowdfunding campaign for my new album, and I'd surely appreciate it if you'd collude with me!

Oh, and I've had few requests, so here's the extended "Director's Cut" version of my Kickstarter video for y'all.  It's nine minutes of your life you'll never get back.

If you've already contributed, you have my deepest gratitude.  But I'd also appreciate any and all sharing you can do of this fundraising page.  And remember, I'm gonna give 25% of the proceeds to the ACLU.  That's kinda self-serving, since I'm hoping they'll help get me out of jail after the album comes out.

My summer schedule is really starting to fill up.  Go to www.sethkibel.com  for the complete itinerary, but I'm including a few highlights below.

Monday, May 29 -- Seth Kibel Quartet
Waterfront Park
1A Prince Street
Alexandria, VA  22314
2 to 3 pm

This is a really fun, free, outdoor festival, with loads of great music ALL day long!  We'll be immediately following the United States Army Blues Band, which is CRAZY good!  I'll be playing with Sean Lane on piano, Bob Abbott on bass, and Wes Crawford on drums.  All the regulars!

If it rains, the event will move inside the Lee Center Richard Kauffman Auditorium located at 1108 Jefferson Street in Alexandria.

Thursday, June 8 -- Seth Kibel Quartet
100 Maryland Avenue, SW
Washington, DC  20001
5 to 7 pm
Another very cool free, outdoor concert series, in a gorgeous setting!  And if it rains, we go inside the Conservatory Garden Court.
With Sean Lane on piano, Dan Hall on double bass, and Nick Ruggieri on drums.
But there's lots more for you to heckle me at!

Seth Kibel Presents Songs of Snark & Despair
Well, I've got a new album in the pipeline and it's VERY different from anything I've ever done before.

Seth Kibel Presents Songs of Snark & Despair is a politically-themed album, consisting entirely of songs I've written since the election in November.  Definitely left-leaning, and with quite a bit of dark humor.

I don't like to put TOO much politics in these email updates, but if you think that it's something that might resonate with you, I politely ask that you check out my Kickstarter campaign to find out more, and help support this project by pre-ordering a copy.

To make these songs come to life, I've enlisted a cavalcade of talented vocalists and instrumentalists from the Washington/Baltimore region.  Click here for the complete list.  I'm thrilled and honored that so many talented individuals took time out from their schedules to lend their musical prowess to my musical rants!

The album is completely recorded at this point, and should be out by the end of the summer. Anything you can do to help spread the word and support this undertaking would be greatly appreciated!

All politics aside, I've got a busy schedule of gigs the next few months, playing lots of non-partisan jazz, blues, swing, and klezmer, all over the Mid-Atlantic.  Go to www.sethkibel.com for the complete schedule.

If you've got little people in your life, check out the Saturday Family Jazz sessions I'll be leading at Strathmore Hall (in the Mansion) on May 20, June 3, and June 17.  These fun programs take place on Saturday mornings at 11 am, and are interactive presentations designed for jazz lovers ages 3 through 11.  Click here for tickets or for more information!

Did you know that clarinet fumes are a leading cause of climate change?  It's true -- I saw it on the internet.

With that in mind, it's gonna get a lot warmer real soon, 'cause I'm tootin' my horn all up and down the East Coast, including a rare return engagement in the Big Apple!  Full schedule, as always, available at www.sethkibel.com, but here are some highlights:

Finally, a long overdue return engagement at NYC's legendary City Winery!

...and the short clarinetist played on...
I know there's a lot of crazy stuff going on these days, but isn't it comforting to know that no matter what happens, I'll still be out there, annoying someone  with my squeaky misery stick?

You can see me do just that on Thursday!

Thursday, February 2 -- Seth Kibel Quartet
Great Sage (vegan restaurant!)
5809 Clarksville Square Drive
Clarksville, MD  21029
8 to 10 pm

No cover, but 1/2 price bottles of wine while we perform!

Yours truly, plus Michael Raitzyk on guitar, Bob Abbott on bass, and Wes Crawford on drums.

MASC Grand Prize!!
So...last Sunday evening, I received an amazing voice mail message informing me that my song, "New Waltz," won the GRAND PRIZE for this year's Mid-Atlantic Song Contest sponsored by theSongwriter's Association of Washington (SAW).

I am shocked and humbled that my little ditty, with no lyrics, and a rather unimaginative title, took home the top honors. I only regret that I wasn't able to make the awards gala to celebrate wit h everyone and give everyone there a sloppy drunken hug. Believe me, I would have!

You can purchase said album here, or pretty much anywhere fine music is sold in the digital multiverse.

Tiny Desk Contest
Now, if it were a "Tiny Clarinetist Contest," I'd be a shoo-in.  And if it were a "Tiny Hands Contest," we all know who would win the prize.  But, it's neither of those things!
It's the "Tiny Desk Contest," sponsored by NPR Music.  If you listen to NPR a lot, you know what this is, but if not, go here to find out lots more!
If you follow NPR Music on any of the social networks, you'll get a number of opportunities to vote for me in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, check out my wild and wacky submission!
